Mugabe's nephew to get TV licence

The government is on the verge of granting President Robert Mugabe's nephew, Phillip Chiyangwa, an operating licence for the second terrestrial television network in Zimbabwe.

Harare – The deal has sucked into its vortex CIO boss Happyton Bonyongwe amid reports he might have misled the executive when he carried out a due diligence exercise on the ostentatious businessman's capacity to run the station, given his chequered past.

Chiyangwa is the maverick tycoon kicked out of Zanu (PF) in 2005 after being caught allegedly selling ruling party secrets to South African government spies. Others involved in the spy ring were jailed. He allegedly received severe beatings and torture and suffered a mild stroke. On his release he became a ‘Born-again Christian' claiming he had found God inside Chikurubi maximum prison, and has subsequently kept a low profile.

Zimbabwe has never had a private TV operator on a nationwide scale.
